“The dog ate my homework!” a classic line from childhood excuses, but as we have gotten older, have our excuses gotten better? Well, a survey from CareerBuilder.com says that some of our excuses may have just gotten weirder.
Being late to work has gotten the best of any hustling and bustling adult, but some of us can’t help but make this tardiness a habit. Survey says that 1 in 4 workers admit to being late at least once a month (that’s what they admit to, at least). There are 1 in 10 who say that unfortunately, they make this a weekly occurrence.
So, if you are late to work this often then you must have some creative excuses, right? Well the typical excuses show that 51% of people blamed traffic, 31% were oversleeping, a whopping 28% said the weather, another 23% said they were too tired to get out of bed, and 13% forgot something at home. I’m sure these excuses have worked for you a few times, but If you are looking for a more original idea maybe some of these excuses will work. Here are some of the weirdest excuses, employers have heard from late employees.
- It's too cold to work.
- My coffee was too hot, and I couldn't leave until it cooled off.
- An astrologer warned me of a car accident on a major highway, so I took all backroads, making me an hour late.
- My dog ate my work schedule.
- I was here, but I fell asleep in the parking lot.
- My fake eyelashes were stuck together.
- Although it has been five years, I forgot I did not work at my former employer's location and drove there on accident.
Now although these seem to be hilarious, your employer may not see it that way. 43% of employers have fired someone for being late, which is a little too close to 50% if you ask me. Meaning you may or may not get fired the next time you walk in late. To avoid risking these odds let’s talk about solutions.
If you’re forgetting things in the morning try packing your belongings the night before. For the people getting caught in the rain, check the weather for the next day and plan your commute accordingly. If traffic the issue, check out your navigation app 30 min before you leave your house to determine the best route. Lastly, for 31% who are oversleeping and 23% who are too tired to get out of bed, invest in a SleepOvation mattress. You’ll sleep better, and awake refreshed and ready for work.
Most people have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep because of the discomfort from their mattress.
